Has AOL Lost It's Mind???

Lord Love A Duck....see the hand waving "Goodbye"??? Too many of the journalist's that I admire, that I read, that I LOVE are leaving!!

I think the executives who came up with this advertising ploy had best refigure what they are going to gain from this.  Customer satisfaction is a valuable commodity and right now you have about 99.99% of J-Land mightily pissed off!

I can understand that AOL needs capital to work it's wonders...however, in this instance...you will be the loser.  Every single journaler who is forced to leave will bad mouth AOL at any given situation.  This is a public relations nightmare!

I like peace, I like harmony....I would give you this scenario...grandfather in the existing journals, do not touch them - anything that was created before November 2005 would be grandfathered in and not have banner ads on them.  Anyone starting a new journal would, including anyone who is adding a new journal to their portfolio.

I believe this would work, I also believe that the older journalers who stuck with AOL through thick & thin would agree with this.

Ok....AOL...WHAT DO YOU SAY???

I think that is a brilliant idea and would keep everyone happy but I cannot see the great god AOL doing it or changing anything. There are desperate for money and will get it any way they can.  I cannot see what they gain.  I mean who will act on this ads.  Not me.  If I go to someones journal I do not go there to open a bank account or join a dating agency, I go there to read the journal.  I am sure most people are the same. So what revenue do they think they will get other than being paid themselves to put ads on.  Sad to see the community break up.  Now so many of them have gone to different places I have totally lost track.  Tried to comment on one on blogspot tonight and it just would not let me.  Oh well.  Maybe some of our friends will come back.

I think that is a wonderful idea - I wish AOL would do it, but sadly, I don't think they will.

Sandi, I think that is a wonderful, and very well -thought out idea.
(Shows that the morons running aol haven't a clue regarding public relations.) That way newcomers can yay or nay it and it becomes part of their terms of agreement. I think we need a lawyer here. Are there any lawyer journalists  on AOL that would do the work pro bono just for the publicity and the principle of the thing?
I've gone private with my old journal and started a new international journal. Notice that aol isn't messing with the Brits!
Anyhoo, I can't find edit buttons or figure much out on this new journal and I have to access it through the back door... (Internet explorer) but at least I have the satisfaction of knowing that the pigs aren't making money on MY creativity!

Thanks guys...as far as the advertising game goes, please remember that a person has to view an ad or product at least 7 to 8 times before it makes an impression.  Haven't you ever been shopping picked up a product, thought hmm maybe I'll try that?...most likely you had been exposed to the promo of that item  6 to 7 times....it registers unconciously.  That's why years ago they did away with flash ads on TV...it was so fast that you almost didn't see it but your brain did! This is what the ad guys are counting on.   Sandi

a wonderful idea, but they wouldn't go through each journal and do that. what we need to hope for is either they take them off, they give us the option to pay extra to have them not there like other sites, or give us the option to pick what we want there. I could live with a banner for preventing child abuse or the red cross. but alas they stick those ones on the main journal pages.

You know I have MSN ... I have myspace (which is free)... but I choose to keep AOL because of the journal and my friends ....AND I CHOOSE TO PAY 14.99 A MONTH TO DO SO ... Is my payment not enough ???? Greedy is what they are ...
If I pay to use something why must I promote items they choose in my journal ... why must I promote anything at all ????

AoL needs to give some answers ... This isn't a free service ... but they make us pay and they can advertise whatever they want on my journal ... I am making a decision soon ... about what I will do ...
Thanks for the post ...

Took me forever to load your journal but FINALLY I got here.. then took a long long time to get to the comment page. GRRR.
But it's worth it to tell you.. I love you too. and it's a very good idea.  I am not sure how they could do it with all their glitches.. but if they have any brains at all they will do it.
To me it's the best idea yet.
I hate to lose all my friends and not being able to read all the journals that meant so much to me...  but I WILL not advertise what I do not want to.
I love you... in fact
love you long time :)

well...i can tell you from my dealings with aol that they don't care much about their customers.  but here i am back again.

on the internet poetry boards (ezboard in particular), the boards themselves are free.  if you want ad free, though, you have to pay for a 'membership'.

i'm with you.  if aol really wants to listen to their customers as they so proudly state when they come up with a new addition to their software..they'll get rid of the danged ads.

Beautiful idea.  Now I wish you had a direct line to the 'ones' that devised this particular scheme.   Pennie

It's sheer corporate greed. And it makes me MAD!

Good idea Sandi, at least that way any new journallers would know they were going to carry banner ads, not like the US journallers who had it foisted on them. Jeannette.  http://journals.aol.co.uk/jlocorriere05/Welcometomytravels
