Politics & Strange Bedfellows

Wow! You know what folks...here we go again.  Why are we so enthralled when they catch someone with their pants literally around their ankles in a compromising position?

Maybe paying witness to another's humiliation makes one feel superior morally and intellectually.

All I know is what I see...I see a nation held captive by the continuing saga of a Governor's downfall. And what's it all about?

sex  SEX & more sex

It was enough to wipe the Obama/Clinton race right off the front page!  Wow, maybe to really get our attention these campaigns need to add some "oomph" to their ads, just so that we really will pay attention.

Are we really just so into becoming voyeur that we would prefer to be a fly on the wall, learning in ever so much detail just what our "neighbors" do behind closed doors?

Everyone knows that sex sells, it also makes some people (yes, both men & women) act in immoral ways.  In this case, it was "don't do as I do, do as I say", or "this law is for you...I'm above the law".

Maybe it's just that I am old, but my way of thinking is still if a man wants to cheat, he is going to find a way, so will a woman.  I still think that if one is caught it should be between the husband and wife...not spread all over the newspapers...so that one becomes carrion fit only to have vultures tearing at your flesh.

Granted, in this instance...this particular man...prosecuted others for exactly what he was doing himself, making him one of the largest hypocrites in recent history. So, yes he deserves what he is getting...when you rise so high, so fast - the downfall can seem unending.

It just bothers me that we are so easily led down this path, again by the news media. If you turn on a radio, the TV, pick up a paper...go on online...the first thing you see is coverage of this incident.  Why? Why make it so dam important? Or does is distract us from watching, waiting, listening to something else that someone wants us distracted from?    I think so.

The fact is we live in a capitalist society, and the news media are profit-making organizations.  They are going to cover what gains the most ratings, because the higher their ratings, the more ad revenue they can sell.  This was going to be news no matter what, because, as you say, he was so vigilant prosecuting others for exactly this crime.  If he'd embezzled money or been an insider trader, the news would be just as big.  The sex just makes it juicier. Welcome to the human race.
I would bet that you, like me, and almost everyone else, are not watching the relatively sober coverage of McNeil-Lehrer on this.  Likewise most of us are more likely to be watching Desperate Housewives instead of Masterpiece Theatre.
It is time to stop lynching the media for responding to what we want to see. They are just a mirror of us.
I agree we don't have to relish the fall of anyone, but should we feel bad when a hypocrite is exposed?  Giuliani had affairs while in office and still ran for President. Spitzer broke the very laws he put into place. It's not just about him having sex.

When one enters the political arena and accepts a position in Public Office they become an emmisary of the Laws that were created by the people to maintain a civil and just society.  Meaning, the laws apply to all.

We know it doesn't pan out that way. That is why when one of those emmisaries is caught with his pants down or a hand in the cookie jar it gives a pereverted sense of  "justice is being served" on the common mans palette.

"Even The President of the United States Must Stand Naked"-Bob Dylan

There is no one amongst us who is free of the "nature of man"...GREED being one of those elements that we find it so hard to control.

Spitzer thirsted for that Cocktail.."power&lust"...at $4,300 a shot...whew!

Thanks for the provocation!

Peace and smiles..Marc :)

Ah yes, we do love to feel "holier-than-thou".  We now know that FDR paraded his floozies around Washington, DC, for the world to see.  But back then the press kept their mouths shut, nobody was the wiser, and affairs of state took precedence over the affairs of the president.  I think that would work just fine today.
